Like a prayer without an answer, like a bird without a song; Like a hope without a future, like a night without the dawn. PumpkinSeed

my lil letter to my representatives...(ACTION NEEDED ASAP!)

please.... could you find someone who's actually implemented a successful budget plan on some level, to be creating these things that affect not only millions in this country, but families across this earth! represent us as you'd want to be represented. I plan to be rich, and yes, I plan to take advantage of tax breaks for business owners, but YES, I GLADLY pay my taxes because I TRUST it goes to serve my neighbors in this great hurting land. =================================

Subject: Vote tomorrow on massive budget cuts, write Rep Rothman today

Tomorrow the House of Representatives will vote on expanding deep cuts to basic services for the poor. We're aiming to send in 50,000 personal notes in 24 hours—can you write a personal message right now?

Dear MoveOn member,

As soon as tomorrow morning, the House of Representatives will consider a Republican amendment to permanently slash funding for basic health care, nutrition and education services for the poor. The budget proposal already calls for $35 billion in cuts, but top Republicans want to push it up to $50 billion. Meanwhile, the same budget proposal calls for $70 billion in new tax breaks, largely for the wealthy.1

It's reverse Robin Hood politics—robbing the poor to pay back the rich.

So today we're aiming to send 50,000 personal messages to Congress in 24 hours—round II of  our emergency budget campaign. We're asking them to vote against the expanded cuts this Thursday, and oppose any budget package that slashes services for the poor while handing out tax breaks to the rich. Can you send a short note right now?

The good news is that a national backlash is rapidly building against the Republican attack on the poor—and it's already having an impact.

Monday and Tuesday MoveOn members joined a national "virtual march" to stop the budget cuts and phoned in over 25,000 calls to Congress. Your efforts helped secure a major victory when the Senate agriculture committee, "fearing a backlash," announced yesterday it would abandon plans to take food stamps away from nearly 300,000 needy families.2

The hypocrisy of the Republican plan to slash programs like Medicaid, food stamps, and student loans while offering new budget-busting tax breaks to the wealthy is being recognized across the country. As the New York Times wrote in a recent editorial:

"Congressional Republicans are trying to invoke the cost of reconstruction from Hurricane Katrina to justify cutting even more deeply and cruelly into programs that help the poorest Americans...The same lawmakers who cheered on President Bush's reckless tax cuts for the affluent, killing the surpluses and creating mammoth debt, are trying to transform themselves into responsible budgeteers."3

Local papers are also speaking out. Florida Today observed:

"These are the same lawmakers who bought whole hog into a huge, pork-ridden transportation bill this summer, and who have no interest in rolling back any of President Bush's tax cuts for affluent Americans. If fact, they'd add more. For shame."4

The Portsmouth Herald of New Hampshire asks simply:

"Do they really think we are so mean-spirited that we would take food from hungry children to offset the profligate tax cuts and spending that have us $300 trillion in debt?"5

And a new national poll shows that the general public, by a margin of 67% to 24%, believes that the Republican budget plan is simply wrong.6

Despite the clear public rejection of their priorities, Republican leaders think they can hide their dump-the-poor, serve-the-rich formula behind the complexity and technical nature of the budget process. It's up to the people to show them that they aren't fooling anyone, and America deserves better.

The first step is to help swing tomorrow's vote in the House. Please take a minute to write your representative, urging them to vote against expanding the budget cuts to $50 billion, and ask them to oppose any final budget package that slashes vital services to the poor while handing out tax breaks to the wealthy.

If we can hit our goal of 50,000 personal letters in 24 hours, we can make sure they get the message loud and clear.

You can write and send your letter online in just a few minutes, by going here:

Thanks for all that you do.
